This year’s focus is on the importance of eye care in the workplace, with employers encouraged to make eye health initiatives standard practice, and promote eye health habits that will benefit the well-being, safety and productivity of millions of employees.
Whether you’re an employer or employee, a great first step is to pledge to #LoveYourEyes, which you can do here.
People can also donate to the charity Sight For All, which works to improve eye health around the world, regardless of location or socioeconomic status, acknowledging that good eye sight is critical to preventing poverty.
When one member of a family is unable to see, it can drastically impact the rest of the family, but 90 per cent of blindness globally can be corrected or prevented. Sight For All works to boost the economy and quality of life in poorer countries simply by increasing the availability of eye care.
Donations are being doubled for World Sight Day 2023. Find out more here.

A global call to action for vision health
Established in 2000, World Sight Day serves as a reminder that the gift of sight is not to be taken for granted.
It provides a platform for organisations, governments, and individuals to collaborate in the fight against preventable blindness and vision impairment.
The day also raises awareness about the leading causes of blindness and vision impairment; cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration are some common culprits. Education and early detection play a crucial role in managing these conditions effectively and preventing vision loss.
COVID-19 highlighted the vulnerability of people with vision impairment. Lockdowns and restrictions limited access to eye care services, making it difficult for those in need to receive essential treatments or eye exams.
World Sight Day emphasises the importance of adapting and ensuring the continuity of eye care services, even in challenging circumstances.
The day serves as a reminder that vision is a human right, and the international community can work together to ensure everyone has the opportunity to see clearly. By supporting World Sight Day, we can all contribute to the ongoing effort to eliminate avoidable blindness and vision impairment, bringing hope and clarity to millions of lives around the world.
